Sakyamuni Buddha‘s Enlightenment Day
and Laba Festival Celebration
The eighth day of the 12th lunar month, also known as the Enlightenment Day of Sakyamuni Buddha, The SA Zhu-Lin Buddhist Association Inc. will hold a ritual ceremony for paying homage to the Buddha, chanting and praying for the blessings on 5 January 2025 (Sunday) from 9:00am. Everyone is welcome to attend the session and pay respect to the Buddha.
We commemorate the Buddha’s enlightenment and the great and dignified virtues, being compassionate and diligent and full of blessings and wisdom. We also dedicate the merits to all sentient beings and wishing them good luck and increasing growth of wisdom.
This day coincides with the Laba Festival, commonly known as "Laba", which is the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month. According to records, on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, Sakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism, saw stars at night under the Bodhi tree and became enlightened. Later generations commemorate this by eating porridge on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month every year. Therefore, "Laba" has become the "anniversary of Buddha's enlightenment" and is called "Dharma Treasure Festival". It is also one of the grand festivals of Buddhism.
Our Temple will provide free Laba porridge as alms at 12 noon. At that time, the Abbot and other Venerable will personally distribute auspicious and safe porridge. Nutritious and delicious Laba porridge cooked with red dates, peanuts, longan, red beans, glutinous rice and other ingredients will be distributed to everyone.
Use this to pray for all sentient beings to eliminate disasters and wish them peace and prosperity! All devotees are welcome to participate! (Remarks: devotees are asked to bring their own utensils to benefit the environment.)
